Suddenly warm, solid arms were embracing him from behind, and he stiffened as he straightened up. He didn’t want Rhyn thinking he was weak or needy. Trying to give the impression that he was fine and that nothing was wrong, he forced himself to relax.

Play it cool, he warned himself. Wait and see what the other man did, how he acted and reacted around him. Then he would tackle one problem at a time, like he always did.

“I missed you. I woke up and you were gone,” Rhyn accused gently, his voice still a little rough and husky from sleep. Lore fought down the urge to nuzzle against him.

“Sorry. Just needed some time to think.”

“Now that doesn’t sound good.”

“Why?” Lore asked sharply, turned his head to look over his shoulder at the man nestling in behind him. Was he one of those people that thought slaves shouldn’t think? That they should be focused wholly and solely on pleasing their master? This was exactly why he was having misgivings about the two of them being together. If Rhyn only saw him as a slave, what chance did they have? He should never have given in to his desires. He should have stayed firm and focused on his people.

“Nothing good ever came of thinking too hard,” Rhyn asserted, giving him a tight, little, reassuring hug. “Just get up and run right in, I say.”

A rush of relief flow over Lore. He grinned despite his recent turbulent thoughts. He couldn’t help it. Rhyn just had such a tenacious, irrepressible personality. It reassured him and calmed him somehow. It was as if nothing the universe ever threw at Rhyn would ever drag him down and that passed on to those around him by default. It touched something deep inside Lore, a soul-deep longing to feel that way all the time.

“I can see you as more of an action man than a thinker,” Lore teased, trying to enjoy the sudden relief and ease he felt in Rhyn’s presence.

“Don’t get me wrong, I like a thinking man. Just so long as he’s thinking about me.”

With that he nipped at the tip of one pointed ear and Lore yipped in surprise.

“Hey!”
